One night, a student in a small Zen temple at the top of a mountain asked his master — "how can I learn to see my true self?"
The master, gazing up at the sky, remained silent for a moment, then handed the disciple a bowl of water and asked, — "Can you see the moon's reflection in the water?”
The student nodded.
“Now, shake the bowl." — Said the master.
As the water stirred and the reflection scattered, the master spoke — "When your mind is disturbed, the moon is lost. Allow the water to calm and the moon will return."
