In the midst of a deep winter, a student asked the Zen master — "How can I quiet my thoughts? When I meditate, my mind wanders aimlessly.”
The master led the student outside into the falling snow, took a handful, and let it fall back to the ground.
He then asked — "Can you hear the snowflakes touching the earth?"
The student listened but heard no sound. He shook his head.
The master smiled and said — "True silence is not the absence of sound but the acceptance of each thought as it comes. Like snowflakes giving in completely to the wind. Let them pass, and peace will follow."
