As the amerindian grandfathers say, "happiness is in simplicity; what's difficult is being simple".

Thank you for making this great point! It makes a lot of sense to me and is coherent with much of what i read and experience. Go with the flow. Let life work though you. We are here to experience life. Why not let it work through you without Ego creating resistance.

"The work seems to move through them instead of out of them" only makes sense if there's actually something already moving before the sculptor picks up the chisel, something the ego then either gets out of the way of or fights. Michelangelo not "inventing" David but removing what wasn't him fits that exactly. The figure isn't a personal creation being imposed on inert stone, it's one current finding the shape it was already tending toward, with the sculptor's hands as the part paying enough attention to stop interfering.

I've written thousands of intricately rhymed and metered poetry without ever knowing what line comes next ~ I know that once I start writing it will come, about as fast as it takes to write it down. 👌

The uncarved block is a rude little mercy for creative control freaks. We keep trying to strangle the work into greatness, then wonder why it has no pulse. Michelangelo removes. Miles leaves space. Bob Ross taps a brush and somehow summons a mountain like a cheerful wizard in denim. Maybe creation is less “conquer the material” and more “stop interrupting what already wants to appear.” Annoying wisdom, but apparently true.
